Gedion T. Nyanhongo was born in Zimbabwe, where he learned Shona stone sculpture under his father, Claud Nyanhongo, a founding member of the Shona Stone Sculpture Movement. His debut exhibition was in 1989 at the Mabwe Gallery in Harare. He has since exhibited widely in solo and group shows internationally, including in England, France, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, South Africa, the United States, and Zimbabwe. His work is in permanent public display at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and he created a life-size zebra sculpture for the Phoenix Zoo.

Nyanhongo’s sculptures have been featured in major U.S. sculpture programs, including the Sioux Falls SculptureWalk (2022–2025) and the Tucson Jewish Community Center Sculpture Garden (2021–2024), among others. His sculpture The Modeler received Best Sculpture in Show at the 2022/2023 Moab ArtTrails Sculpture Exhibition, and Motherly Love received People’s Choice and was purchased for permanent display at the 2023/24 St. Joseph Sculpture Walk in Missouri. He is a member of the National Sculpture Society and maintains studios in Fostoria, Ohio and Phoenix, Arizona.

Nyanhongo’s sculptures focus on the elements that collectively make up the bigger picture—life, love, and the sensations that define us all. His work celebrates love, especially family love, and the spiritual power it provides to promote peace. Through deceptively simple, flowing forms, he offers insight into his Shona heritage and Zimbabwe’s rich culture. He exclusively uses indigenous stones mined in Zimbabwe—such as serpentine, springstone, opal, lepidolite, and verdite—which he imports to the United States. Each sculpture is carved, chiseled, and honed completely by hand using traditional Shona tools, over many hours, by the artist alone. He sees his practice as advancing the Movement into the 21st century while maintaining a bridge to ancestral stories and cultural memory.
