SaToro Tafura is a Zimbabwean stone sculptor whose work affirms Shona culture while reflecting themes that resonate across diverse audiences. Born into a family of prominent sculptors, he is the grandson of Claudio Nyanhongo and son of renowned sculptor Agnes Nyanhongo.

His artistic education began in early childhood as he observed and assisted family members in the studio, and he carved one of his first stone pieces around age five. Tafura’s work gained international attention, leading to exhibitions in Germany and England before expanding across the United States. He eventually relocated to California and traveled frequently to Colorado, including as an artist-in-residence at Chapungu Sculpture Gallery and for an extended exhibition at the Denver Botanic Gardens. In 2008, Tafura settled in Colorado, where he works from a studio with a mountain view reminiscent of his childhood home near the mountains bordering Mozambique.

He sculpts primarily with hand tools, maintaining an intimate relationship with raw stone. Tafura is also known for large-scale bronze casting, using patinas that mimic the look of stone. In 2017, he quarried a 16-foot serpentine stone in Zimbabwe and began work on a 14-ton sculpture—one of the largest Zimbabwean stone sculptures created to date.

Tafura describes sculpture as a powerful and personal way to communicate. By carving Zimbabwean stone and carrying forward generational knowledge, he sustains a connection to place, culture, and ancestry. His intercultural life experience, fatherhood, and commitment to cultural preservation continue to shape his evolving themes. He believes each raw stone contains inherent power, and his role is to channel that power rather than compete with it. Through his work, Tafura is determined to express aspects of Shona culture that are at risk of being discarded under external cultural pressures—reclaiming identity and self-worth through form.
